Course Description
The course may be used by those interested in learning to perform densitometry examinations or may be used as a refresher for those already proficient in the examination. The course provides a comprehensive introduction to bone health and covers acquisition of bone images via x-ray densitometry examinations. The first chapter of the course covers ethics for technologists performing x-ray densitometry examinations and compares and contrasts the Code of Ethics of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists® (ARRT)® and the International Society of Bone Densitometry® (ISCD)®. The impact of low bone mass diseases and conditions and osteoporosis is discussed with specific chapters covering adults, men, and children and adolescents. Recognized treatment guidelines for osteoporosis are presented in the course.
A review of skeletal anatomy presents the anatomic areas of concern for bone densitometry technologists. The course covers proper positioning and scan protocols for attaining x-ray densitometry examinations of the vertebral spine, proximal femur, and distal third of the radius and ulna. A chapter is devoted to radiation safety in x-ray densitometry. Practical application tips are provided in chapters covering reducing medical error and improving patient safety and communicating about bone health. The intent of these chapters is to provide suggestions for safe delivery of services during densitometry examinations.
This course is based on the book Introduction to Bone Densitometry & Bone Health, by Jeana Fleitz, M.Ed., RT(R)(M)(ARRT)™. The book/PDF is 329 pages long and 8.5 x 11 inches in size. This book has 12 pt font and 1.5 line spacing.
The test has 120 multiple choice and true/false questions.
