Course Description
The goal of this course is to provide radiographers with a foundation of knowledge about the science of forensics and forensic radiography. Forensic radiology is a specialized area of medical imaging using radiological techniques to assist physicians and pathologists in matters related to the law. Forensic radiographers are individuals who are qualified to operate medical imaging modalities and acquire requested ante mortem and post mortem images. The forensic application of medical radiology can be applied in many fields; the prime target of evaluation is the osseous skeleton, but soft tissues and abdominal and thoracic viscera may offer key findings.
In this course, the radiographer will learn how radiography is an important investigative tool in the forensic identification of deceased individuals and human remains. Mass casualty events result in an overwhelming need for medical care of the injured and identification of the dead. Radiography examinations help identify the victims of mass casualty events and in the case of fire and explosion the identification of remains. Identification of wounds is an important aspect of forensic investigations and radiography is the ideal modality for visualizing internal trauma. Abuse and body packing often end in the death of the victim and radiography is requested to demonstrate these actions. Forensic radiographers are required to have a thorough understanding of biological and radiological safety hazards, production of radiography images, and radiography positioning of the deceased as well as live patients. To satisfy these requirements, this course includes individual chapters on these topics.
This course is based on the book Forensic Imaging, by Jeana Fleitz, M.Ed., RT(R)(M)(ARRT)™. The book/PDF is 369 pages long and 8.5 x 11 inches in size. This book has 11 pt font and 1.5 line spacing.
The test has 192 multiple choice and true/false questions.
