Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive introduction to bone health and covers the acquisition of bone images via x-ray densitometry examinations. The course may be used by those interested in learning to perform densitometry examinations or may be used as a refresher for those already proficient in the examination. Ethics for radiographers performing x-ray densitometry examinations, the impact of low bone mass diseases and conditions, and osteoporosis are discussed with specific chapters covering adults, men, children, and adolescents. Recognized treatment guidelines for osteoporosis are presented in the course.
A review of skeletal anatomy presents the anatomic areas of concern for bone densitometry technologists. The course covers proper positioning and scanning protocols for attaining x-ray densitometry examinations of the vertebral spine, proximal femur, and distal third of the radius and ulna. A chapter is devoted to radiation safety in x-ray densitometry. Practical application tips are provided in chapters covering reducing medical error and improving patient safety and communicating about bone health. These chapters intend to provide suggestions for the safe delivery of services during densitometry examinations.
