Bullying is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate or aggressively dominate others. Bullying is not limited to the taunting’s of school children but exists in the workplace, organizations, and social media. I recently attended a program here in Louisville, KY sponsored by Norton Healthcare. The speaker Lizzie Velasquez motivated me to share the following information. Lizzie suffers from a rare congenital disease which impedes her from accumulating body fat; thus she looks different.
Growing up Lizzie was the object of bullying, hateful remarks, and abuse from other children. When Lizzie saw a posting on social media titled “The Ugliest Woman Alive” she turned her hurt and anger into a positive force and is a national activist in anti-bullying legislation. Falling victim to bullying during her youth is what ultimately inspired Lizzie to become a motivational speaker.
Currently, she is working with Congress in support of the first federal anti-bullying bill, the Safe Schools Improvement Act. I urge all radiographers to ask your legislators to support the federal anti-bullying bill. Also, I want to encourage you to be aware of bullying and know that as radiographers we can stand up against abuse and mistreatment.
